01/04/2009 - Happy New Year..

Happy New Year! I hope that all is well with you and your family. Here is where we are at:

Parts 'n Stuff

Santa brought me an interior kit! Red with the white piping. I will have pictures next time.

Hubcaps are here.

Engine gasket kit is here.

All of the other parts I need are either on order or I am working on it. Some of this is costing $$!

Work on the Car

Check out the pictures below and see for yourself!

First layer of primer on the "engine" cover. Lots of bondo spots on it, but most of it is pretty thin. I have put the lifting section on to see how everything is going to look together. Isn't it cool? Looks like a torpedo! This thing is huge! I cannot wait to get the front wheels back on it. I do have a problem with the lifting section though. It is pretty rusty and thin in certain areas, and the front half of the hinge rod is gone. So, the lifting section flops around when lifting. What to do?

The answer? Go down to Ace Hardware and buy a couple of hinges! Can you see the new hinges? This panel is too weak to try to cut out and replace the original hinge. Besides, that looks like too much trouble. I went down to Ace and bought 2 inch hinges, cut out the rusted hinge pieces on the lifting section and bolted these on! I had to modify the hinges a little bit to make them work, but that only took a minute on the vise. The screws you see will be covered by the external rubber piece and trim. They appear to be working just fine. The lifting section opens and closes! The other holes you see are either rust holes or my earlier failed hinge attempts...don't ask! They will be filled.

Here is the hinges on the inside. Pretty cool, huh? And yes, I know you purists hate this stuff, but works and it is cheap! BTW...new gauges for a DKW are on the way!

And here is a picture of the rear swing arm re-installed...all sandblasted and repainted! A Monroe 3100 shock worked just fine for the shock, and I think it will work for the front ones as well. I will need to adjust the shock to lower the ride height. Check out the snappy wheel with hubcap.

The bodywork continues, but the majority of the shell it finished. I should be able to wrap up the body, engine cover and lifting section in a couple of weeks. The hood is going to take longer. It is pretty messed up, and it was never engineered correctly. I have to figure out how to brace the whole thing. More on that later. I also plan on getting the seat recovered this week coming up. A variety of projects going on with it.

I hope to have it on the road this spring!
